Here are some various parts of Life Science

HUMAN BIOLOGY

Rapid fire human body. Go!

The human body can be organized into various systems:

  • muscular
  • skeletal
  • circulatory
  • respiratory
  • nervous
  • digestive
  • reproductive

Circulatory System

     S - 3 parts

  • Pump (heart)
  • Pipes (arteries, capillaries, veins)
  • Fluid (blood)

F -Carries oxygen (O2) and food to each of the cells

-Carries carbon dioxide (CO2) and wastes from each of the cells

Respiratory System

S - Lungs, diaphragm, trachea, bronchi, air!

F - Bring O2 into the bottom and CO2 out of the body

Nervous System

Structure - Brains, spinal cord, nerves, and senses

Function -Controls and coordinates our actions

-Tells us what is going on around us

Digestive System

Structure - There are lots of parts to this system, and many form a passageway through the body

Function - Breaks down food into energy for the body to use

Muscular System

     Structure- Three types of muscles

  • Skeletal Muscle
  • Cardiac Muscle (heart)
  • Smooth muscle

     Function:

  •  Allows us to move
  • Moves stuff around inside us

Skeletal System

Structure - Made of 3 things

  • Bones (206 in an average adult)
  • Joints - where 2 or more bones meet (4 types)
  • Connective tissue (cartilage, ligaments, tendons)

     Functions

  • Helps us move
  • Protects organs
  • Support us/gives us shape
  • Stores minerals and makes red blood cells

CELLS

All cells are made of different parts called ORGANELLES. They work together to make up the cell and to make it survive.

Here is a couple of animal cells:

And here is a plant cell:

Organelles' structures and functions:

Membrane

S-Flexible outer layer of a cell

F-Controls what goes in and out of a cell

Nucleus

S-Large, round organelle in the middle of a cell

F-Controls the activites of a cell (sort of like a brain)

Cell Wall

S-Hard outer layer (outside of membrane) **Only in plant cells**

F-Gives plants support (Plants do not have skeletons, so the cell wall is what allows them to stand up)

Cytoplasm

S- Thick fluid, like a gel, that fills up the cell

F- Gives the cell shape and helps things move

Mitochondria

S- Little rod-shaped organelle. Many ofthem in a cell

F- Supplies energy to the cell; the "powerhouse" of the cell

Endoplasmic Reticulum

S- Series of passageways around the cell, like a maze

F- Carries materials around the cell

Golgi Body

     S - A stack of flattened pancakes

F - To package and deliver materials

Vacuoles

     S - Water-filled sac

         Plant cells – have 1 big 1

Animal cells – have lots of little one

F - Storage for waste, water, food and more

Nucleolus

S – Little organelle inside the nucleus

     F – Makes ribosomes

Ribosomes

S - Tiny, grain-like organelles, found all over cell

F - Where proteins are made, like little protein factories

Note: Proteins are the building blocks for all cell parts

Lysosomes

     S - A small round cell structure

F - Breaks down materials, like a recycling center

Chloroplasts

S - Little green organelles, found only in plants

F - Captures sunlight and uses it to make food for the cell

          This is where photosynthesis happens

There are a lot of good diagrams that could help a lot for studying.
